Many whanau (families) have been fortunate to inherit kakahu, which is the generic name for traditionally made or customary Māori cloaks.
In recent times, there has been a plethora of Kakahu or Korowai inspired cloaks made from artificial material and machine made but claim the traditional names for kakahu, in particular Korowai in their description.
In accordance to taonga tuku iho (the passing down of knowledge, skill and expertise) it is unethical and grossly incorrect for te reo Māori kupu (words/names) to be used to describe garments that are not authentically created using traditional and natural materials.
The whanau of both these legacy weavers believe the book Weaving a Kakahu is a user-friendly guide to making a treasured whanau kakahu and E Nga Uri Whakatupu is guaranteed to provide plenty of inspiration.
